Penny Dreadful Remains Immortal: Louie De Martinis Interview!

Image
This is an interview I have been so excited to post, and even though I hit many delays, I was lucky enough to have this artist be patient with me and let me pick his brain about his work. I could'nt of fan girled harder for this one, as this interview is with the artist of the PENNY DREADFUL comics - Louie De Martinis! Yes Velvet-ians, PENNY BLOODY DREADFUL. Many usual readers will know I am a huge fan of the show and had a mild breakdown when the series ended; however fans were happy to find out that we could stay in that Dreadful universe with some of the most loved characters in these awesome comic books.  The artwork of these comics are to die, and possibly come back to life, for and I asked the man with the hands behind it all, a few things about his work! First, of course, I wanted to know how this gothic illustrator got into illustrating in the first place;  VF: How did you get into drawing and comic art? and how did you find your style? LDM: I was always a fan...

I Want To Go To The House With A Clock In Its Walls.

Image
I recently found the trailer for new family friendly horror/fantasy movie The House With a Clock in its Walls and I must say, there's a smaller version of myself (yes, that's possible) inside that is jumping with joy to see this movie. The House With a Clock in its Walls is an adaptation of John Bellairs' horror novel for kids and now it is gracing our screens with both fantastical magic and acting magic that is Jack Black, Cate Blanchett and introducing young actor Owen Vaccaro as our orphan boy Lewis. The story I am a little unknowledgeable about, but that's because I wanna be, I want to keep as much magic within the movie as possible; sometimes that's hard to do as a film reviewer, but then I realise 'This is all a choice dude...' However, I do want to talk about what we've been given within the trailer; I think one of the main reasons I am excited about this, is it made me feel nostalgic to when Disney released A Haunted Mansion with Edd...

This Is America, Honestly.

Image
I needed to talk about this video; I know EVERYWHERE is right now, but I had to join in. This video is one of those that comes around, with sincerity of it's message AND genuine musical genius, once in a handful of years and that of course is Childish Gambino's This Is America. I have been through so many emotional and logical levels in my mind since listening to this newly released track by multi talented Donald Glover; who I still very much love as Troy from US show Community. On first watch I was excited, loved that the new tunes where trumping the old ones and like many I was thoroughly entertained watching Gambino dance around the warehouse where the video was set. But to say it's more than that is a *swear word coming* FUCKING UNDERSTATEMENT. I started to notice little things on my own, that the pieces of the actors in the background where bigger than appeared to be, I began to hear the lyrics more clearly and for the first time in a long time, fel...

I Like Trailers Some Times.

Image
Velvet-ians! How are you all me lovelies! It has been a while and sooo much has happened in the film and media world that I have not taken the opportunity to ramble about, so now I am! I have interviews coming for you, I have reviews, the usual rambles and what not coming to you, because I not only missed YOU guys, I also missed being able to talk about films and stuff till I am blue in face….I guess blue in the fingers now since I’m typing? Does blue in the fingers sound creepy to anyone else? So, as a ‘end of hiatus’  piece I am coming in with something simple and that is my great trailers that I have seen so far this week! After looking specifically for certain trailers and then clicking on suggestions, I found some of these little rose buds to talk about! Without further ado and more self answered, lame arsed joke questions; here’s my list - Hot Summer Nights Traile r First off, is Hot Summer Nights  the next film to come out with Timothee Chalamet headlin...

A Love Letter to Call Me By Your Name.

Image
Call Me By Your Name is a coming-of-age drama, adapted from Andre Aciman’s 2007 novel of the same name. The story, set in 1980’s Italy, follows 17 year old Elio and the love that blossoms between him and an older grad student staying with him and his family for the summer, named Oliver. This gem that is taking the festival circuit, and soon the cinema, by storm is directed by Luca Guadagnino, who we know for films such as A Bigger Splash and I Am Love and with Armie Hammer and breakthrough actor, Timothee Chalamet as the forefront of this movie, who can truly have any doubts before watching?!?! Since I saw a preview screening of Call Me By Your Name yesterday, I have been trying to figure out some structure for a review; something similar to how I’ve always reviewed, you know, ramble too much, talk more about my inability to hate movies and then write a line about the movie itself, but, and not surprisingly, that wasn’t working for a piece on this film. Trying to write a bor...

More Than An Actor; James Franco.

Image
This weekly Wednesday topic on Velvet 'More Than An Actor' is basically a chance for me to talk about all the books and Spotify playlists and more that I have by people in the film industry that I'm obsessed with. As this is the first piece of its kind, it was a little to pick what one, from a very long list, to kick start it off with; which seems a bit silly since all the others listed will fill up future Wednesdays. Eventually I decided on one, as you may have already been able to tell from the title, and that is the literary work of Mr James Franco. We've always seen a lot of James Franco, well because he's James Franco, but recently he's got Franco and films fans alike all excited with the trailer release for The Disaster Artist, a movie about the greatest worst movie of all time; The Room. Like a lot of people, I was first introduced to James by the classic stoner comedy; Pineapple Express , and yes I called it a classic, can you deny it? I...
