Grave Encounters 2 Review

Grave Encounters 2 (2012)

Cast: Richard Harmon, Leanne Lapp, Dylan Playfair, Sean Rogerson.
Written By: The Vicious Brothers.
Directed By: John Poliquin.

The sequel to the controversial horror movie Grave Encounters (2011), where internet film reviewer/student Alex (Harmon), begins to get weird emails of clips and hints about the first movie that cause him to start researching into the realism of the of movie. Alex' research takes him and his friends to the location of the first movie; a sinister mental institution in Vancouver. Like the first movie, innocent filming turns into a fight for survival, a fight for sanity against the paranormal and unknown.

Now a lot of this movie is shown in Alex and Trevor's (Playfair) 'halls' and them partying, this gives it a more realistic taste to it, especially with the story having the young characters researching the story rather than them being those cliché teens that go into the hospital because they think it'll be 'fun'. The hospital itself is one location beyond perfect for a horror film, you feel it's cold and foggy atmosphere just through the screen. The location messes with you as much as the actors, it gets you lost, it gets you unable to look away, it's used for it's right potential.

Acting is difficult to talk about with this kind of movie for me, because as good as a film as it is or could be, it has that kind of acting that's good one minute, then too cliché the next. However with a pretty much unknown cast it works better, you accept it.

Negatives with this movie consist of the 'creatures' they created, that they show you, are created with computer effects and I feel that can ruin the movie. The writers create this amazing psychological aspect, I feel the movie would be have been much more successful as a whole if they had allowed the audience to let their imaginations run away with them.

The movie as a sequel us successful, it has more twists, more stops, more madness and a bigger touch of reality than the first one. It has it's cliché moments, with effects that kill the story as well as the characters, but there is usually a door that opens to resurrect it again. I suggest watching the up and down stories of the Grave Encounters movies. You will be entertained, terrified, shocked, confused-but can you escape it?

My Rating: 6.5/10
